Following the collapse of a storey building in Okwe-Asaba, Oshimili South Local Government Area in Delta state, atleast four people have been critically injured and one person confirmed dead.
WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that the said building which is under construction collapsed in the late hours of September 13, 2020.
It was also learnt that the building collapsed after a thunderstorm hit its foundation during a heavy rain in Asaba.
According to report, five people were rescued from the rumbles of the collapsed building, one was confirmed dead on the spot while four others were rushed to the hospital in critical conditions.
Findings revealed that the collapsed building which belongs to 79-year-old Akariwe was built without an approved building plan.
Speaking on the incident at the scene, a member of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Daniel Okpor lamented the structural work of the collapsed building was faulty.
Okpor said, “Five people were trapped under the collapsed building. We were able to get them out; four are receiving treatments at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, while one was confirmed dead on the spot.
Likewise, Comrade Uche Osadebe, Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, attributed the collapse of the building to structural defects.
“This is just a situation of people trying to cut corners to save money. Now, somebody has lost his life and money has also been wasted. We do not even know if those in the hospital would survive,” he asserted.
